Travelpro Maxlite 5 21-Inch Spinner

Maxlite 5; 21-inch spinner

Travelpro's light construction is useful when baggage limits leave little room for the suitcase itself. GearLab's review supports its practical handling for travelers who prefer expandable soft-sided luggage.

Why it ranks here: First for manageable weight and ordinary carry-on use.

The tradeoff: Measure full exterior dimensions, including wheels, against airline limits.

Samsonite provides a familiar hard-shell format with four-wheel movement and interior separation. It suits buyers who prefer a rigid case and straightforward packing rather than external soft-sided pockets.

Why it ranks here: Second for a practical hard-shell alternative.

The tradeoff: Hard cases cannot squeeze easily into tight spaces.

Compact hard-sided option

Delsey Helium Aero 19-Inch

Delsey Helium Aero; 19-inch

Delsey's smaller hard-sided format offers another way to balance interior space with carry-on dimensions. It is useful when a compact case matters more than maximizing the advertised size.

Why it ranks here: Fourth for a different hard-shell size and layout.

The tradeoff: Published size names do not always include wheels and handles.
